As a girl just out of 8th grade, with the thought of not going back to school made my heart want to cry. I always loved school, so when th bus came and went the next fall, I felt left behind. What were my options?
My parents were kind enough to let me enroll in American School, so I worked on my high school education at home but never finished. My prayer was that the Lord would establish a place where our children and youth could go to school not only the first 8 grades, but could continue on through high school. I had a vision of having a school like a "Haven" where children could be taught the curriculum of 12 years, preparing them for life which when they stepped out of it, they would be prepared to give service to the Lord and make a difference that would be a challenge to the world.
This school is now going for its 40th year and we will step back and take a view of the beginning of a challenge.
Raymond Barkman, Roman Beachy and Noah Troyer were the first board members. It was the year of 1967 and that summer the Lord put a stirring in my heart to teach school. But where? I opted for a place in a one room Amish school where know one would know me. I had gone to Pennsylvania to a funeral and talking with an elderly man from the church, without knowing me, he said, "Lady, you ought to be a teacher."
I was very interested in school so I attended a meeting on The Aspects of Christian Day Schools, at the Shiloh church. As I was going home from the meeting I met one of the Marantha board members and we talked and he said, “And just where are planning to teach?” I said “I'd like to teach but the Lord has not shown me where yet.” This was the first part of August, the call came loud and clear. “Will you teach at Marantha School?” Now I was scared. Lord, not me. This is a new school with all students coming from public schools, the parents never having sent their children to a Christian Day School. And this teacher had never taught school. How will this work? How can these people even trust me? But the Lord said, “Yes this is what I want you to do.”
It was August when the school house was being built as an addition to the church building. The board members, parents, children and church people all had to help. They all had a zeal to work. I think these people had more hours in their days the people do now. There was work involved and somehow it got done, as in Nehemiah, So built we the wall (or the school) and all the school was joined together unto the hall thereof, for the people had a mind to work. Neh.. 4:6
In 1967, school started late because there was still work to be done at the school, but this didn't dampen the spirits of the people. The first board meeting there was still a big, gaping hole which was knocked out of the church house basement and the basement of the school was still full of dirt and gravel. We were going to start school in October.
