At Berlin Mennonite we strive to be a welcoming people. Making places where people can share their stories and be encouraged is a priority. Food is often a part of these activities whether it be appetizers at a baby shower, breakfast casseroles at a gathering for mothers of preschoolers, comfort food after a funeral of the splendid array of dishes at a potluck. Hospitality occurs in our homes as well - guests around the table sharing food and conversation, finding common ground. Eating together brings physical and emotional renewal.

Many examples of hospitality are found in scripture. Jesus is the ultimate host. Regardless of gender, adge or status, He welcomes all. We see him conversing with the woman at the well, feeding the 5000 who came to hear him teach, eating with those considered to be outcasts, and sharing many meals with his disciples. From the One who welcomes us, we learn how to welcome those God brings to us. He reminds us that what we do for others we are doing for him.

Memories of food shared with othersa are represented by the recipes in theis cookbook. These are our favorites, ones that have proven to bring smiles and "more pleases" when served. By sharing them we hope to make it a little easier to be hospitable, to find an easy freezer meal to take to a new mother, a tasty soup to share with someone recovering from surgery, or a cake to welcome a new neighbor. We also hope it makes it easier to be hospitable to our own families, encouraging us to have more meals eaten together.
